It may be a small stretch of road at the north end of downtown, but Roosevelt Row is an emerging live, work and play area worthy of a Weekly! Running east to west, from Grand Avenue to 16th Street (or as some say, 3rd Ave to 7th St), this ‘hood is chock-full of burgeoning indie businesses and funky finds. Let’s explore, shall we?
We begin just steps away from the Light Rail at Carly’s Bistro, which Yuri A refers to as “the quintessential RooRow bar: vibrant, eclectic, friendly, unpretentious. They have great beer (including a fantastic rotating tap), solid sandwiches and friendly, attentive staff.” Likewise, Si R heads just around the corner to his favorite downtown bar, The Roosevelt. “It’s got the perfect atmosphere – it’s loud, but not deafening, it’s cozy, it’s got great character, and a kick-ass beer selection.” Don’t forget to order “the grilled cheese and tomato soup… there’s so much Gruyere on that thing it oozes out on all sides. And the creamy tomato soup – that mixture of heavy cream and savory tomato – it’s bliss.”
Of course, there’s more to entertainment in Roosevelt Row than just boozing it up. Music mavens, such as Daniel R, may support local rock bands like Sister Cities at Modified Arts. “Well worth the cheap price of admission, this little gem hosts great shows in a slightly better than garage atmosphere.” And with Lost Leaf nearby, you can take beverage breaks between sweaty sets with the likes of Ayesha S, who describes it as “a simple neighborhood bar that delivers in the way of a wide selection of brews, rotating art and quaint atmosphere.” Just this week, yelpers are abuzz over the Vanessa Atalanta and Sweet Bleeders shows!
Not to worry, shopaholics, there’s something for you too. Robyn K downs some caffeine to keep her going at Conspire, where they not only serve a mean cup o’ joe, but are also a bona fide buyer’s delight – “filled with locally made garments, jewelry, paintings, buttons, patches, and other things.” Meanwhile, Christina R puts her plastic to work at Made Art Boutique, where she digs their “selection of quirky books and curious items to improve your household, specialty magazines, and hilarious independently printed propaganda.” One bit of hype you can believe? Roosevelt Row is one cultural and vibrant district you don’t want to miss.
